Verdict is out! Audience finds the finale of ‘Biryani’ a bit undercooked

The finale of Biryani has landed and viewers are not holding back. What began as one of the most promising dramas of the year has ended on a note many are calling “undercooked,” with fans expressing frustration over unresolved arcs and abrupt character choices.

The episode concludes with Nisa and Meeran reuniting after Gul Meher persuades Meeran’s father to finally accept their relationship. The two then return to bring Gul Meher home, only for her to decline. While the ending technically ties up the central love story, it has ignited widespread disappointment, particularly over how certain characters were treated.

A number of viewers felt the conclusion robbed Gul Meher of the emotional justice her character deserved. One fan wrote, “An alternate ending should have been how meeran finally realizes how much his lawfully wedded WIFE actually loves him. After the rainy night conversation with nisa, he finally sees the sacrifices and contributions of Gul Meher HIS WIFE in his life and decides to be a better man, a better husband… But no, we will not show that.”

Another viewer questioned Meeran’s complete lack of confrontation:
“WHY did Meran not confront his father over Gul Meher’s character assassination? HOW could he let go of someone he supposedly held in such high regard so easily?… They just held hands and walked off into the sunset leaving Gul Meher behind. Gul Meher deserves better. This drama had so much potential and they squandered it all.”

But the criticism didn’t end there. Rashid’s portrayal as a sudden antagonist also drew criticism, with viewers saying it felt forced and convenient — a narrative device rather than an organic development. One viewer wrote, “Nisa’s excuse of leaving rashid is just… As if she was looking for a point against rashid to leave him and run back to meeran.”

Another added, “Both Nisa and Meran are selfish people. Period. Nisa betrayed rashid and had the audacity to talk about trust. And meeran wasted gul’s life precious years because he didn’t take the stand at the right time.”

Some even flipped their sympathies entirely:
“Maturity when you realized Meeran and Nisa are the real villains of Biriyani. They are using Rashid Bhai and Gul Meher.”

What frustrates fans the most is that Biryani started off strong, with remarkable chemistry between Ramsha and Khushal, sharp dialogue, and a storyline that touched on an important topic. But by the end, all that promise seemed to have squandered, leaving audiences with a finale that felt misaligned with the emotional journey they were promised.

For a drama that sparked such enthusiasm early on, its conclusion has left many wondering how a story with so much potential lost its way.

Theft foiled at qawwal’s house in Lahore, suspect arrested

0

Chung Police in Lahore successfully prevented a major theft at the residence of renowned qawwal, Sher Miandad Khan. The incident occurred while the Khan family was away attending a wedding function. The prime suspect, a domestic worker employed by the family, was apprehended shortly after the crime.

The theft unfolded when Zarina Bibi, a domestic worker in the Khan household, stole valuable jewelry in the family’s absence.

The worker managed to flee the scene with the stolen items, but the police acted quickly, using investigative technology to trace her whereabouts to her home, where she had buried the stolen jewelry in her backyard.

The police recovered approximately 6 tolas of jewelry from the ground. They have registered a case against the domestic worker, which will now proceed in court, where the suspect faces serious charges.

If found guilty, Zarina Bibi could face imprisonment, a fine, or both, depending on the value of the stolen property, as specified in Section 379 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

A recent example from Karachi involved a maid who stole jewelry worth Rs 6.5 million from her employer’s home before fleeing, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance in households across the city.

ECP rejects delay plea, orders Quetta LG polls

0

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti’s appeal to postpone local government elections in the provincial capital. The commission has clarified that the elections in Quetta will be held as per schedule, on December 28. These polls have been pending since 2022.

The ECP has issued a written decision in this regard, noting that the request to postpone the local government elections had been submitted by Bugti and has been rejected.

The commission has directed the provincial government to ensure foolproof security and arrangements for the elections. The provincial government has been ordered to provide full assistance to the ECP under Article 220 of the Constitution of Pakistan which mandates that all federal and provincial executive authorities assist the commission, ensuring independent functioning and fair elections.

Meanwhile, Member ECP Shah Muhammad Jatoi of Balochistan has written a dissenting note, expressing concern of low voter turnout due to severe weather conditions and the prevailing security situation. He has suggested the elections be postponed until conditions improve.

In his appeal seeking postponement, CM Bugti had also cited the deteriorating law and order situation, as well as the internet shutdown and harsh weather, which he said causes people to migrate seasonally, resulting in low turnout.

The ECP has already completed preparations for the elections in Quetta, with the printing of ballot papers having begun on Monday.

Thailand pushes back on US tariffs as border clashes with Cambodia flare up

0

Thailand has resisted US tariff pressure aimed at enforcing peace with Cambodia, as border clashes reignited this week, ending the Trump-backed ceasefire from July. At that time, a call from then-US President Donald Trump and the threat of “crushing tariffs” had helped halt five days of intense fighting.

“Bangkok’s resistance is a test for Trump’s tariff play, but the tariff has always been a blunt instrument,” said Chong Ja Ian, political science professor at the National University of Singapore. “Whether it can get a lasting ceasefire over longstanding and deep-seated animosities has been and is doubtful.”

Trump, in his quest for a Nobel Peace Prize, has attempted to mediate in several conflicts in recent months using tariffs as leverage, with mixed results, while also alienating some countries. Earlier this year, his push to halt fighting between India and Pakistan—reportedly using sky-high tariffs—strained relations between New Delhi and Washington. India, however, denies tariffs played any role in ending hostilities.

At a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Trump said he expects to make a phone call on Wednesday to stop the fighting between Thailand and Cambodia, without elaborating.

Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow stressed that resolving the border conflict should remain separate from ongoing trade negotiations. In October, the United States and Thailand announced a reciprocal trade framework maintaining a 19% tariff on Thai products, while identifying areas for potential tariff cuts. “We feel that it’s unjust already that we should be subject to a unilateral tariff of 19%, and perhaps they want to impose even more tariffs if they’re not happy,” Sihasak said in an interview on Tuesday.

Thailand and Cambodia have disputed parts of their 817 km (508 miles) land border for over a century. Efforts to address overlapping claims have made little progress, leading to periodic military flare-ups.

The current hostilities come as Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul—who took power in September after his predecessor was ousted over the border issue—prepares to dissolve parliament next month and trigger snap elections in March. Anutin has already faced criticism over his government’s slow response to deadly floods in the south last month, threatening to derail his Bhumjaithai party’s ambitions.

“It puts Bhumjaithai in this position of angling to prove its leadership mettle during its short stint in leadership, and that’s quite clearly to try to win votes in the election that’s coming,” said Laura Schwartz, senior analyst at risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft.

While higher tariffs remain a risk, Anutin and his party may seek to harness nationalist sentiment by taking a tougher stance on trade and separating it from the border dispute. Anutin faced sharp criticism from some of the more nationalistic elements when he signed the ceasefire agreement brokered by Trump and Malaysia, said Voranai Vanijaka, a lecturer at Bangkok’s Thammasat University. “So he’s going to keep Trump away for now,” he added.

A nationwide poll in August showed Thais overwhelmingly trust the military—which has been most strident in its response to Cambodia—over the political leadership.

“Thailand may face an immediate tariff blowback, but it is betting on its military superiority and the limited nature of the conflict,” said Chong. “It probably believes that it can prevail and the Trump administration will live with that result.”

Sydney Sixers unveil unique jersey number for Babar Azam

0

The Sydney Sixers have revealed a distinctive twist on Babar Azam’s iconic jersey number, adding an extra layer of excitement ahead of the 15th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).
The franchise announced the move on Tuesday through its social media platforms, showcasing the star Pakistan batter at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground.
While Babar is widely associated with the number 56, the Sixers introduced a creative variation — the 30-year-old will sport 056 this season.
Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, meanwhile, will continue wearing the classic 56. The franchise framed the decision as a lighthearted and stylish way to distinguish the two high-profile players who share the same preferred number.
The announcement coincided with Babar’s arrival in Sydney for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched international stints of the upcoming BBL.
The Sixers welcomed him with a short video clip showing the prolific right-hander walking into the dressing room, accompanied by the caption: “He’s arrived.”
The teaser quickly went viral among fans eager to see the Pakistan captain in action on Australian soil.
BBL 15 will run from December 14, 2025, to January 25, 2026, featuring 44 matches primarily during prime-time evening slots. With a revamped schedule and increased international participation, the league anticipates strong global viewership this season.
Pakistan will have a significant presence across multiple franchises. In addition to Babar and fellow superstar Shaheen Shah Afridi, the country’s representation includes: Mohammad Rizwan and Hassan Khan (Melbourne Renegades), Haris Rauf (Melbourne Stars), Shadab Khan (Sydney Thunder), and Hasan Ali (Adelaide Strikers).
This influx of Pakistani talent is expected to inject extra flair into the league, especially given the players’ current form and strong fan following.
The BBL has confirmed that the 2025-26 finals will retain the traditional four-match structure. The Qualifier will take place on January 20, culminating in the Grand Final on January 25, 2026.
With Babar’s arrival and his eye-catching jersey reveal, excitement is building rapidly among Sixers supporters — and the broader cricket world — as one of the game’s premier batters gears up for his first full BBL campaign.

Mbappe face Haaland in UCL showdown

0

Real Madrid desperately need superstar Kylian Mbappe at his magical best on Wednesday in a pivotal Champions League clash against Manchester City and unstoppable striker Erling Haaland.
After just two victories in seven matches, fractures have emerged in Xabi Alonso’s Madrid project, with some Spanish media reporting a defeat against City could lead to a premature dismissal.
So often this season Madrid have underwhelmed but been rescued by Mbappe’s lethal brilliance, scoring 25 goals in 21 games to lead the scoring charts both in Spain and in the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s City are spearheaded by Norwegian international Haaland, who has 20 goals in 20 games across all competitions and, along with Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, is Mbappe’s only rival as the standout star of the current season.
The pair have also been drawn against each other at next summer’s World Cup in the United States, with Mbappe’s France to face Haaland’s Norway on June 26 in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The first chapter of that battle will be played out at the Bernabeu, where former Barcelona coach Guardiola would relish being able to add to Madrid’s misery.
This season City are structured around Haaland, playing to the forward’s strengths and aiming for the majority of their moves to end with the ball at his feet in front of goal.
What structure Alonso tried to impart at Madrid has crumbled away amid a tussle for power with the players, although Mbappe’s quality has made him their key figure.
“The team is a flat, uninspired group clustered around Mbappe, whose goals merely mask the crisis,” wrote Spanish newspaper AS on Sunday after a 2-0 home defeat by Celta Vigo.
“If he takes a day off, there’s no alternative.”
Mbappe has been Madrid’s one constant this season, thriving when the team was doing well during a run of 13 wins from 14 matches, but also in recent weeks amid their struggles.
After a slow start to life in Spain following his move from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024, Mbappe found his top gear in the second half of last season.
In 2025 he has scored 55 goals for his club, four short of the 2013 record of 59 set by Cristiano Ronaldo, his childhood idol and Real Madrid’s all-time top goalscorer.

Splintering Madrid
Mbappe has emerged as a unifying force at Madrid, even as the team splinters around him.
Alonso arrived aiming to impose himself as a coach cut from a different mould than Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane before him, considered excellent man-managers, but with less of a tactical and technical focus.
With Mbappe as his only untouchable outfielder, Alonso started the season by rotating Vinicius Junior with Rodrygo Goes and Dani Carvajal with Trent Alexander-Arnold, constantly shuffling his pack.
Jude Bellingham was sidelined after shoulder surgery and Arda Guler was thriving in midfield.
The team ground out results but discontent among some star players grew, coming to a head with Vinicius’ fit of rage after being substituted in the Clasico in October, which Madrid won.
Bellingham’s return from injury further forced Alonso’s hand over selection, along with Fede Valverde’s reticence to play out of position at right-back.
A string of away matches, in part because the club were hosting an NFL game at the Bernabeu, contributed to their recent slump as the signs of Alonso’s ideas about pressing have diminished and the big-name players start every match.
After a 1-1 draw at Girona at the end of November Mbappe called on the team to “show who we are” and “change this dynamic”.
“It’s not just about goals for Kylian… but he does other hugely fundamental things like leadership, influence, helping his team-mates, and that’s so important day to day,” said Alonso, appreciating the calls for unity from Mbappe.
Madrid thrashed Athletic Bilbao 3-0 last week, with the result an outlier in their recent form, with AS claiming the players were particularly motivated by the promise of two days off for a victory.
Those days, taken ahead of the defeat by Celta, may have contributed towards the defeat — which could have finished in a draw if Mbappe’s lob had fallen under the crossbar rather than just over it, with the Galicians leading by a single goal.
It was a question of millimetres, but would again have been a case of Mbappe papering over the deepening cracks. And yet against the might of City and Haaland, in the eye of the storm, for Alonso even that would do.

FCC sends Evacuee Trust Property case back to LHC for rehearing

0

The Federal Constitutional Court has annulled the decision that classified the allotment of Evacuee Trust Property to the Punjab Education Department as a governmental dispute. The court has remanded the matter to the Lahore High Court for a fresh decision.

Evacuee Trust Property Board was established in 1960 with its HQ in Lahore to look after the Evacuee Trust Properties / Land left over by the Sikhs/Hindus who migrated to India during partition in 1947-48. The ETPB states that its objectives are, “To supervise and control all Evacuee Trust Land / Property attached to the charitable, religious or educational trusts or institutions or any properties which form part of the ‘Trust Pool’”.

The hearing, conducted by a two-member bench headed by Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi, questioned whether allocating Evacuee Trust Property to the Education Department could truly be considered a dispute between two governments. He further asked how land historically used for Hindu cremations had been allotted to the department.

Justice Rizvi noted that construction was likely to have taken place on the land since its allotment in 1989. He also asked how the Punjab chief minister had authorised the allotment of Evacuee Trust Property to the Education Department. The Additional Advocate General of Punjab requested time to seek instructions.

Justice Rizvi inquired what action the Evacuee Trust Property Board itself had taken regarding the allotment, and why the Board had filed an appeal under the name of the central government. He observed that this was not a dispute between the federal and provincial governments.

Justice Rizvi stated that the decision of the Lahore High Court was being set aside and the case was being remanded for rehearing. The Lahore High Court will now hear the matter afresh. Both the ETPB and the Additional Advocate General consented to the court’s proposal.

IHC issues notices in Jehangiri degree scandal

0

The Islamabad High Court has issued notices to all relevant parties in the degree controversy involving Justice Tariq Mehmood Jehangiri. Notices were sent to the federal government through the Ministry of Law, the President through the Principal Secretary, the secretary of the Judicial Commission, and the parliamentary committee on judges’ appointments.

Notices were also sent to the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Karachi University. Justice Tariq Mehmood Jehangiri has been served notice, and all parties have been asked to submit responses within three days. The court has declared the writ petition admissible.

The HEC submitted its report to the court, stating it has no role in university administrative affairs and that the petition is an internal matter of the university. The commission said universities and their authorised bodies are solely responsible for issuing degrees.

It added that Justice Jehangiri’s degree was never presented to the HEC for verification and no request is pending. The HEC clarified it neither issues nor approves degrees and cannot verify a degree not recognised by the relevant university.

Karachi University outlined the reasons for the cancellation of Justice Jehangiri’s degree. The university said that in 1989 the Unfair Means Committee imposed a three-year ban on Tariq Mehmood after finding him guilty of cheating and threatening an examiner. Under the 1989 decision, he was eligible to retake examinations in 1992. The university said the student used a fake 1990 enrolment form bearing a forged stamp of Government Islamia College to obtain a degree despite the ban.

The university added that the enrolment number 5968/87, which appears on the degree, was originally allotted to a student named Imtiaz Ahmed. Another enrolment number, 7184/87, was obtained in 1990 through forgery for LLB Part II. Multiple enrolment numbers and altered names were used to secure mark sheets and the degree.

Karachi University said a citizen, Irfan Mazhar, applied for verification of the degree on May 23, 2024. The university rechecked both enrolment numbers, and the Controller of Examinations declared dual enrolment impossible, terming the degree and mark sheets invalid.

The registrar of the Islamabad High Court emailed on July 5, 2024 seeking confirmation of the Controller’s findings, and the university verified the letter declaring the degree invalid. The principal of Islamia College confirmed that Tariq Mehmood was never enrolled at the institution between 1984 and 1991.

During court proceedings, the Chief Justice instructed the Advocate General Islamabad to read Karachi University’s report in court. The Advocate General read the responses submitted by Karachi University and HEC. Judicial Assistant Barrister Zafarullah Khan supported the admissibility of the writ petition and presented legal arguments.

Petitioner Mian Dawood, Advocate, began his arguments, highlighting the university’s letter that declared the degree fake. Written responses from HEC and Karachi University were submitted to the court.

The bench hearing the case comprises Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan. Judicial Assistant Barrister Zafarullah is also present.

Punjab alerts public to widespread fake e-challan SMS scam

0

Citizens across Punjab have reported receiving fake e-challan SMS messages. In response, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority has issued a warning, urging residents to stay vigilant of such online scams.

According to a Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) spokesperson, Safe City never requests cash, account, or bank details via SMS. And that legitimate e-challan notifications are only sent from the official Punjab government number, 8070.

Scammers attempt to extort money by luring citizens into clicking on suspicious links. The public is strongly advised not to make any payments through suspicious SMS or websites. All PSCA services are completely free for citizens.

The spokesperson further urged them to immediately contact 15 or the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Wing if they receive any suspicious-sounding messages. E-Challan SMS always includes details such as the time, location, and the relevant violation information.

Strict action would be directed against those attempting to commit fraud under the PSCA name. The authorities have filed a complaint with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to identify and take legal action against the individuals responsible for cloning the authority’s official website.

Scam texts were usually something we swiped away without much thought. A fake bank alert here, a courier delivery hoax there — but security researchers warned the game was changing.

According to Wired, cybercriminals were deploying “SMS blasters.” These were portable devices that posed as a cell tower to trick nearby phones into connecting to them, after which they sent out a mass broadcast of fake SMS messages.

Once they hijacked that connection, the devices could unleash up to 100,000 texts an hour, swamping whole neighbourhoods with phishing attempts.

Election Commission schedules Islamabad local polls for February 15

0

The Election Commission has announced that local government elections in Islamabad will take place on February 15. Nomination papers will be submitted from December 22 to 27, the Election Commission announced.

The verification of candidates’ nomination papers will take place from December 30 to January 3, the Election Commission added. Election symbols will be allotted to candidates on January 16.

Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Irfan Nawaz Memon will serve as the District Returning Officer for the local government elections. Local government elections will be held across 125 union councils in Islamabad.

The poll will be conducted in accordance with the Local Government Act 2015.

The federal capital has been without an elected mayor since February 2021. Since Islamabad was established as the national capital in 1967, only two elected mayors have served the city, holding office between 2015 and 2021. After the last local government (LG) term in Islamabad Capital Territory concluded on February 14, 2021, elections have been repeatedly postponed under various pretexts.

The Election Commission of Pakistan announced that local government elections will be held in Islamabad on November 18, issuing a long-awaited decision on the delayed polls in the federal capital. The ECP released its reserved verdict on the matter on Monday, ruling that the recent amendments to the Islamabad Local Government Act 2015 were inconsistent with the Constitution and the law.

In its written order, the ECP had said the Secretary of the Local Government Department could not conduct elections for women and other reserved seats, noting that appointing district returning officers (DROs), returning officers (ROs), and other poll officials was the sole authority of the commission.

Local governments in Islamabad are governed by the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act 2015. Section 29 of this Act stipulates that a local government’s term spans five years from the date of its inaugural meeting.

The Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) held its first meeting on February 15, 2016, when Sheikh Anser Aziz was elected mayor. He served until his resignation in 2020, after which Adil Gillani was elected to complete the remaining LG term. This local government’s term concluded on February 14, 2021.

Under Section 219(4) of the Elections Act, 2017, the ECP is required to hold fresh local government elections within 120 days of a term’s expiration, which meant elections should have been conducted by June 2021. Yet, more than four-and-a-half years later, the capital continues to function without elected local representation.
